Psalm 49

Written October 30, 2008

Psalm 49 seems to be written for today.  Much of it deals with earthly blessings versus heavenly ones.  Verses 16-19 are powerful and sobering….

            Do not be over awed when a man grows rich,

            When the splendor of his house increases;

            For he will take nothing with him when he dies,

            His splendor will not descend with him.

            Though while he lived he counted himself blessed—

            And men praise you when you prosper –

            He will join the generation of his fathers who will never see the light of life.

A strong reminder of where our true treasure lies.

It reminds me of Mark 8:6 “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”
